Entering date

I am tryin to format a cell that will enter the date
automatically using NOW() or TODAY(), but I do not want
the date to change once it is entered. How do I do this?
Should I be using a different formula?

If you use a formula it will change. Use a value or control semi-colon keys
at the same time.

Matt,

Ctrl-semicolon will put the current date into a cell. It won't change.
Ctrl-Colon (Ctrl-Shift-Semicolon) will put in the time.
