Entering a date displays incorrectly

Hi all,

I have a Lotus spreadsheet I am converting to Excel 2000.

Some of the cells contain manually entered dates. However if I type
valid date ie

12/10/2003

Excel thinks this is a calculation and divides 12 by 10 then by 200
and then it converts it to a date?

Anyone any idea how or why this is happening and how I can stop it.

Thanks in advance
