endless convert/opend database window

Hi,
Something very scary is happening with my multi-user
access database. I cannot open it anymore, and neither can
any of the users. It is showing the convert/open database
window and regardless of which option you choose between
convert or open it just goes back to that window again and
again.

Obviously there's a problem with the database but I can't
even get inside to try to compact and repair it. Can
anyone help? This is critical.

One more detail :
Also when we give up we get an error message
saying "Cannot update. database or object is read-only".
