I have a problem with some of my fotos, that i had encrypted with winxp, now i can't revert the process because i made a format to the main hard drive and i have puted the fotos in another HD, know the winxp, doens't reconize my new PC name and doens't allow me to revert this process. I want to know if there is a way to revert this problem with the new acess
Thanks!

Before you encrypt anything important, you should back up your
personal encryption certificate (with its associated private key)
and the recovery agent certificate to a floppy disk and store it in
a secure location. If you ever lose your original certificate
(because of a hard disk failure, for example), you can restore
the backup copy and regain access to your files. If you lose all
copies of your certificate (and no recovery agent certificates exist),
you won't be able to use your encrypted files. No back door exists,
nor is there any practical way to hack these files.
(If there were, it wouldn't be very good encryption.)

Without a backup of the original Encryption Certificate Key, encrypted files
are unrecoverable as they will stay encrypted forever. There is no recovery
method since the encryption algorithm is now completely different with a
reinstall of Windows XP.

Consider the files gone! There is NO BACK DOOR to decrypt them.

Hi,

Are you sure you mean they were encrypted? This is a process that you would
have to physically start, and is only available in WinXP Home. If you are
getting "access denied" on these files, it may simply be that you need to
take ownership. If this is the case, please see:

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP [Q308421]

If they are truly encrypted, then the only means of recovery is the original
encryption certificate or a recovery agent made in the installation that the
files were encrypted on. Without one of these, those files are lost.

uh - *not* available in XP Home; it is Pro only.

Gack!

Got that backwards, thanks Alex for catching it. I meant to say "and is not
(not 'only') available in WinXP Home"
