Encoding documents

How would I encode a document? For example this:
%PDF-1.4%âãÃÓ
4 0 obj<</Linearized 1/L 1302697/O

If you're trying to open that file in Word, don't. It's a PDF file,
for which you need to use Adobe Acrobat Reader. If somebody mistakenly
renamed it with a .doc extension, change it back to .pdf.
