enabling PAE on RC2

i've read at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms791485.aspx that
all 32bit versions of windows (inc vista) have PAE disabled by default.

how do i get vista RC2 to enable PAE?

this page http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa906211.aspx seems
to explain what todo. even after a restart, tapping in 'bcdedit' shows
the last 2 lines of:
nx OptIn
pae ForceEnable
so it should work fine. however, it aint. Bios is reporting the full
4gb. vista 32bit RC2 is reporting a mear 3gb.

any ideas? dont go saying "edit the boot.ini file". vista dont have one
;). that was the 1st place i looked to enable PAE.

If you have DEP on, PAE is enabled by default. There is a limitation of
some motherboard BIOS that will only allow 32bit Windows to see 3 GB or so
out of 4GB of RAM. If you can change certain settings in your BIOS, you may
be able to overciome the limitation. MTRR change to Discrete (from
Continuous), Memory Hole setting, Hardware remapping of memory are the
things to look at. My partner has the same problem in 32 bit XP, but
unfortunately there is no way in his BIOS to change the necessary settings
(Gigabyte mobo).

enabling 'memory hole' in bios made bios see all 4gb (before it was
3.1gb detection)
vista still reporting 3gb tho.

i thought vista was meant to be able to use all 4gb of system ram. 32bit
limit is 4gb, 64bit limit is 128gb+.
i've either miss-understood the info i've read or i havent yet found the
right settings in vista.
