"Enable third-party browser extensions" ?

B

Bill

Hi everyone

What exactly does the "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires
restart)" checkbox do in Internet Properties? A friend suggested
de-selecting this would make my computer more secure. Is that true? Will
I lose important functionality if I uncheck it?

Thanks in advance

Bill, do a google search for Browser Helper Objects and also Enable
third-party browser extensions.
You just about answered your own question. A good firewall and antivirus
program plus anti spyware will keep you relatively safe but not 100%.

Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)
[[Specifies that you want to disable features you installed for use with
Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than
Microsoft.
If you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve,
you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are
causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart
Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off.]]

The question mark (?) is your friend.
On the Advanced tab of Regional and Language Options in the upper right
corner is a [?].
As there is in many other Windows items.

[[Help is available for each item in this group. Click ? at the top of the
dialog box, and then click the item you want information about.]]
Left click [?] and your cursor turns into a ?, click the item you want to
know about.
This will display a help topic if there is one.

Bill,

As others said. None of the third-party IE add-ons will load (BHOs and
Additional Toolbars). I believe the additional buttons still work with this
option unchecked.
