EMERGENCY with External HD!!!

For some reason, I'm not getting any new messages for the hardware
group. But I get new messages for this one. Weird!

I just got a WD external harddrive; started it up and moved some data
over.

Now my computer doesn't see the darn thing!!! There is one "Unknown
Device" listed under USB (in Computer Management). Could that be my
external hard drive? The details for "Unknown Device" say that no
drivers are loaded. But Driver Details says its a Windows driver.

How do I get my computer to recognize it again? (I'm using XP SP2).

Awaiting your responses with baited breath, I remain, yours truly,

Go to device manager and uninstall the unknown USB device. Then, unplug
the hard drive and then plug it back in again. It should try to install
the drivers again.

If that doesn't work you can right-click on My Computer and then click
"manage". Click on disk management and see if the computer has
recognized the hard drive but just hasn't assigned the hard drive a
drive letter.

I hope this helps!

I uninstalled the "Unknown USB Device."
I unplugged the external HD.
I plugged it back in again.
Windows XP found new hardware -- then gave me a popup saying it was an
unknown device.

Is there a way for me to FORCE a driver on my computer to load up the
external HD?
