Embedded object opens as a picture

When I embed an word document as an object, it opens as a picture by
default.How can i avoid this?
 
You don't mention the Word version you are using or exactly what steps you
took before. Below is for 2003 and prior, instructions for 2007 may differ
but the intent is the same.
You must ensure that on the Insert, Object, Create from File dialog you
check "Display as icon". Many people do so initially when the Insert Object
dialog opens (i.e. in the Create New dialog) and then click the Create from
File tab, this action clears the choice and you will get an image of the
object not an icon.
How this can be set to default? I don't know, hopefully someone else may hop
in here with a macro or registry solution for this.
