I recently got a reply from someone who angrily asked me to stop sending them emails with virus attachments. This bothered me because, I don't know who this person was. Now, I believe someone is using my computer to send malicious emails to people. How can I stop this? Is it some kind of virus, spyware, or what? I use msn. Please email me, if you know what I can do. I really feel as though my privacy has been encroached on. If someone can use my computer to send emails, they certainly can read others can't they? please help me. Eloy C.

Do you have a firewall installed? A spyware checker? A virus scnanner?

Actually, it's far more likely that the person receiving the emails is
seeing a "spoofed" email address. That is, it's a fake email address stuck
into the From line by the virus sending from another computer (not yours)
that has your email listed in their address book. That way, it looks like
it's from you, but it isn't. This is a traditional way for worms to spread
themselves without the "sender" being made aware of the problem by those
that receive the emails. Unfortunately, this means that you can't really do
anything about it, and the person who is asking you to stop should just put
up a block or rule to filter out emails coming from your address. Better
yet, they should install an antivirus program that will strip away the
emails that are infected so that he/she doesn't have to be overly concerned.

If you are concerned that the emails are truly coming from your system, just
make sure you have an antivirus program installed, with the latest updates,
and do a full scan of your system. However, as I mentioned above, I highly
doubt that the emails originate from your computer.

I dont think anyone is using your PC to send e-mails, I think someone is
forging you. I find, all the time, I get "returned mail" which has my
e-mail address in the "from" field and I have looked at the Internet
headers to see it clearly was not sent from my system.

However, if you are running Windows without a Firewall installed, it is
possible that people are using you as a proxy to do their dirty work, if
so, you need to sort this out as soon as possible!

Considering it is your address that is being used, it's probably just a
forgery produced by lots of viruses... they scan people's address books for
e-mail addresses and use them.

Either way, I have crossposted this article to news.admin.net-abuse.email
which is highly appropriate either way. I can only ask you to post the
e-mail with full internet headers and somebody will be able to tell if it
has come from your machine or not, by looking through the Internet headers.

Whoa! Didn't know that Kay Hangman. You see, I have a spyware scanner and Norton Antivirus, and both are fairly up to date. I scanned with both today and both came clean, so I was wondering if it could be anything else. I hope that's the case and there is nothing on the computer.
Now, this person said I send emails to her quite frequently, can that still be explained by someone typing in my email address

Probably, it's most likely a robot is getting your address from somewhere,
just to be sure, can I only suggest you ask her to send you the e-mail with
full Internet headers... when you have it post it here and I will show you
where the message actually came from. This will allow us to see if it is
coming from your PC (probably through a ha><or) or if it's just from
someone else.

By full Internet headers, I mean this:
