emails have dissapeared

hi

this morning I had a hundred or so emails in the inbox.
suddenly they have disappeared and are now sitting in apps
data/Microsoft/mail why did they go there and how do I get them back and how
do I stop this happening again?

I have been getting a pop up saying windows can compact but I cancel each
time and what to stop this option

With Inbox opened, check the View, Current View setting.
It should be on Show All Messages.

Not allowing compaction to occur is detrimental to the health of
the message database. Do the compaction. If it fails, run the
various database repair functions in the WMUtil program:

all messages was showing so not sure what happened.

sort of solved the problem of getting emails back by elating the account and
setting it up again but no idea why they all disappeared in the first place.

will do the compacting next time I am asked, could you just explain what it
actually is though.

By default the compaction process asks to run after you've opened
and closed Windows Mail 100 times. That frequency can be adjusted
under Tools, Options, Advanced, Maintenance. Once you let it do its
thing, it should not bother you again for another 100 runs.
Unlike OE, Windows Mail doesn't need message compaction, it only needs
message store (database) compaction. It compacts the database which is an
index or lookup table for the messages. Every time you delete an email, that
slot in the database is made into a blank. Compaction removes all the blank
spaces that have developed in the database. Periodic removal of the blanks
will make database accesses faster.
