email with attachments comes in gibberish

I have a user who has a client who, occassionally, sends an email with
attachments, usually PDF, which end up being gibberish within the body of
the email. This only happens with this client, and they say it only happens
with us. They also say that the original email in the users Outlook is not
malformed. I looked at the header and nothing looks unusual.

So the sender is using Outlook and the recipient is using Groupwise? Is the
sender using Outlook's default Rich Text Format? Tell them to resend but
change the format to plain text.

No, th other way around. The sender is using Groupwise and my user has
Outlook. The strange thing is that it's the attachments that are coming
through as gibberish within the body of the email.
