Does anyone know if the window mail has a email notify to alert you of new
mail with out having the thing open or even if there a gadget to put in the
sidebar thanks.

No, but if you click the "Close" button on Windows Live Mail Desktop it puts
an icon in the Notification Area that turns yellow when you have mail.

There is a program mentioned in an earlier thread:
