So I've been trying to figure out how to keep Windows Mail from automatically
opening the next email in my mailbox. For instance, I open an email from my
mailbox... after reading it I then delete it... the next message in my
mailbox then automatically opens up. Is there a way to change this activity?

View menu>Layout>disable Preview Pane.

You can put the Preview button on the top toolbar, use it to toggle back and
forth from each view.

View menu>Layout>customise toolbar>select Preview in the left pane and move
it over to the right.

gave your suggestion a try and disabled the preview pane. Same problem
exists.... I open an email, then click delete, and the next email in the list
opens automatically.

any onther suggestions?

With the Preview Pane disabled you should only see a list of all messages,
and you would need to double click on one of them to open it.

You are opening a mail and deleting it from the message window, don't do
that, close the mail and then delete it from the message list in the main
window..

When I was using my old Outlook 2000 version I did not have to do this. When
I opened an email into a new window, I could delete the email and then
Outlook went right back to my Inbox. I don't understand why I cannot do the
same thing with Windows Mail?

Don't delete a message while you have it opened in its own window.
Close the window, then delete it from the message list.

Outlook is a premium ($$$) mail client. Windows Mail is a freebie.
Free mail clients are not as full-featured or as configurable as
premium mail clients.

Windows Mail is different.
