email attachments still take forever to save

I tried the trick of opening Window's calender and it still hasn't helped.
Saving even the smallest attachment is agonizingly slow. It hangs up the
whole program so I forward them to an outside mail address to open all
attachments. There has got to be a better way. Suggestions?

Also: having stopped all virus scanning openinng Word is still a thumb
twiddling process. Other office programs open with no problems. All add in
are disabled. Is there anything left to try?
