Email attachement problem

Steven

I have a problem opening email attachments. I have tried different
attachments with no avail. It used to work and something has now stopped it.
I even have problems saving the attachments. I can start the save process,
but Window Mail locks up. But strange enough the file is saved to the correct
location. If I try to save multiple attachments, only the first file is
saved, than its locked up again.

On a side note, during one of these crashes a email was corupted, I can no
longer read it. I can also not delete it or move it to a new folder.

What if any antivirus programs do you have, and have you ever had a
Norton or McAfee antivirus program on that computer?

For the undeletable message, download and install this temporary fix,
with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or
the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first. Certain common
antivirus programs, such as most of those from Norton or McAfee,
tend to cause such problems under Windows Mail, although seldom
immediately, so if you have such a program, remember where to
find the fix - you are likely to need it again. A recent version of the
Trend antivirus software also causes assorted problems in Windows
Mail.

Robert thanks for the info. I'm currently running Norton. I have had several
issues with Norton pertaining to other things on Vista. I'm not happy with
it. Do you have any thoughts on other virus software?

Avast! is free for home use.

Most versions of the Norton antivirus software cause assorted problems
in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately. To stop it from creating
new problems, you have to uninstall it, not just disable part or all of it.
You then often need to run this cleanup program to get what the
uninstall left behind:

You may even have to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail and create the account again.

If this solves your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program. I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with a
custom install that tells it to leave out the part that scans email.

Steven, myself I use Avast! Antivirus Personal/Home Edition under the 64 bit
version of Windows Vista Business here on my laptop without any problems.
It seems to get along and play nicely with both Windows Mail and
Thunderbird, which I also use.

Ok, uninstalling Norton did two things! It first made my problem disappear!!
YAHOO!!! Second my computer is twice as fast, but I feel naked without virus
software. So I downloaded Avast, but what will stop viruses in email if I
remove that feature from the Avast options?

By the way thanks to everyone for your help!

Viruses in email have no harmful effect unless they get out of the email,
at which time they will be detected by avast!.

thanks Again. Will disabling the email feature in Avast have the same
results? like a knuckle head, earlier(before reading this stuff) I installed
the Avast as a typical install.

The user interface of its free version is hard enough to learn that
you may have problems finding a way to do this. If you do, try
it and let us know.

Again, thanks for all the help.

As for how to turn it off, I think you click "stop provider" than make sure
to click the stop on reboot button.
