I have Emachine 600IS and went to up grade my 64megs of memory with 256.
The local pc shop gave me Kingston KTH6501/256 as compatable with the
machine.
However when it boots it only sees 128 megs of ram. Any one got any
suggestions?? do I have to reset any thing in the bios or set up??

Your system is maybe limited to 128mb of memory.

I lookup your system from
http://parts.emachines.com/emachines/

It shows only 128MB 1 Pc. Sdram dimm pc 100 as upgradeable.
The technician should of known this and replaced it with the maximum
about of memory It can handle.

However, I read there is another type of chip that will fit into the
slot and give your more memory. I don’t recall the name of this chip.
It still may not work.

If it was me I take the machine back and ask for the correct size at
no charge.

How many memory chips on the RAM board?
You might using high-density RAM in the motherboard that only accept
low-density RAM.

No mater how much memory you get your system may be limited to 128 mb
unless you can find the special chip that will increase it. Your
motherboard only has 1 memory slot.

I think the chip I am talking about is called Sdram II.
Those do cost a little more. However, I am not sure if it will fit
into the slot.

If you had a shop do it take it back and ask him/her put another chip
back in at no charge. (However, you may need to pay the Difference
for the part if the chip cost more)

You may want the PC shop to phone 1-877-KINGSTON because they told me
(I phoned them over a DDR problem and decided to ask about this as
well) that the part no. is for a Compaq or HP computer and is not
compatible with your eMachine 600is. They also said that the 600is
can't use any module bigger than 128MB, not even double-sided 256MB
ones. If the PC shop told you that the KTH6501/256 was compatible,
then they owe you an exchange or 100% refund.

Larry,
I know there a memory chip that will double the memory. I read this
on a web site. This chips double the Maximum memory in your system.
Some it will work on and some it won't.

I have a kingston in my machine by the way. I have emachine 2040w and
it is working.

I don't see how a memory chip can do that because some other
electronics
would be needed.

How many chips are on that KTH6501/256 module (memory modules and chips
are two different things)? Because unless it has at least 16 chips,
that is, at least 8 on the front and at least 8 on the back, the
machine won't see its full capacity. But when I've tried 16-chip 256MB
modules with really old mobos, they always showed up as 256MB.

Have you tried downloading and running BIOS Agent, from
www.unicore.com/biosagent/index.cfm , to see what kind of chipset your
eMachine 600is uses?
