Eliminating Microsoft Messnger popups FOREVER

T

Timothy Carlson

Those Microsoft Messenger popups from outsiders
is like being invaded by the Alien. I NEVER use them.
I NEVER want anyone I know to use them. And most of all,
I NEVER want to see one again. This one feature makes me
believe there IS something nefarious going on with this
otherwise fine operating system. I do not trust all
the unwanted messages that ask me to pay $29.95 to get
rid of them forever with some garage program. If Bill
Gates and Steve Ballmer do not offer a way to turn them
off, I am seriously going to switch to Linux or whatever
operating system hasn't made a deal to turn me over to
these kudzu-like monsters.

How do I switch off Microsoft Messenger popups FOREVER?

For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q330904

Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve the
real problem.

The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom of a larger
issue. The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.

Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports. You would need a
firewall that controls the traffic.

The above solution will not work if you have AOL as is not compatible with
Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). If you have AOL, you should
contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party firewall.

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Hit the Stop Button under Service Status section
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:

Or

"I HEAR YA,... I HEAR YA..."

I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL THIS MESSENGER SERVICE PROGRAM
REALLY IS, BUT I'VE READ ATLEAST A DOZEN ARTICLES IN PC
ORIENTED MAGAZINES STATING THAT BILLY (SQUEAKY)GATES &
MICKEYSOFT HAD THIS PROGRAM EMBEDDED WITHIN WINDOWS 2000
& WINDOWS XP... AND I WHOLE HEARTEDLY AGREE WITH THEM.
AND I HAVE THE PERFECT TEST TO PROVE IT.

1) DO A COMPLETE FORMAT AND REINSTALLATION OF 2000/XP.
2) SETUP YOUR INTERNET SETTINGS.
3) PLACE YOUR SYSTEM ONLINE, ASSUMING THAT YOUR ON A
DSL/BROADBAND CONNECTION.(always on)
4) NOW JUST LEAVE IT THERE "WITHOUT" INTERNET EXPLORER
OPEN... JUST SIT THERE AT YOUR DESKTOP OR GO AWAY AN
COMEBACK LATER.
5) NOW JUST COUNT HOW MANY POPUPS YOU'VE GOTTEN VIA THIS
SO CALLED "MESSENGER SERVICE"
6) NOW ASK YOURSELF... DID YOU INSTALL ANYTHING THAT
MIGHT HAVE HAD THIS PIECE OF SHIT PROGRAM EMBEDDED IN
IT..? NO..? THEN I WOULD IMAGINE THAT IT WOULD HAVE HAD
TO ALREADY BEEN THERE INORDER FOR IT TO HAVE BEEN
INSTALLED,... RIGHT...?

NOW INCASE YOUR THINKING TO YOURSELF, "HEY, IT COULD HAVE
BEEN SPYWARE... WELL I WENT OUT OF MY WAY AND PURCHASED
A "NETGEAR ROUTER", AND CALLED THEM WHEN I HOOKED IT UP
AND HAD THEM HELP ME SET IT UP WITH FULL FIREWALL
PROTECTION... AND THE POPUPS WERE SHOWING UP WITHIN 5
MINUTES OF PLACING MY SYSTEM ONLINE,... DIRECTLY THROUGH
A "FULLY" FIREWALLED ROUTER...

BUT THEN AGAIN,... I'VE BEEN USING XP NOW FOR ALMOST 6
MONTHS... AND ALTHOUGH IT LOOKS MORE APPEALING... IT IS A
TOTAL "JOKE" OF AN OPERATING SYSTEM, WITH TOTALLY FAULSE
ADVERTISED FEATURES. BECAUSE I HAVE MORE PROGRAM LOCKUPS
& CRASHES WITH XP THAN I EVERY DID WITH 95/98/NT/2000.
AND YOU "DO" LOOSE YOUR WORK,... THERE IS NO SAVING OF
ANYTHING...PERIOD. XP IS A TOTAL JOKE. BUT THEN AGAIN IF
YOU THINK ABOUT IT... BILLY BOY WOULDN'T BE MAKING AS
MUCH MULLA OF SELLING NEW OPERATING SYSTEMS IF HE
ACTUALLY CAME OUT WITH ONE THAT DID EVERYTHING THAT IT
WAS BRAGGED ABOUT BEING ABLE TO DO... NOW WOULD HE...?

THINK ABOUT IT.

I have been running XP Pro since it hit the market, before that I ran ME. I
have had one, just one BSD in that time. I play with adding and removing
components, software and different internet connections. This particular box
has had in it at various time CPUs, 1.7 Cel, 1.8 Cel, now 2.4 PIV, 1 x 256
DDR 266, 2x 256 DDR 266, 2 x 512 DDR 266 ram, now 1 x 512 DDR 333 ram. It
has had four different modems, two different network cards, three different
Home free phone line cards plus still having the onboard NIC 10/100 at all
times enabled. I have used the onboard AC 97 sound, had a creative Sound
Blaster value, Pine cheapo sound card and now the Creative 5.1 Sound blaster
OEM. I have had four different burners through the box, Mutsumi, Matsashita
and 2 x LGs. This is the second hard drive. Now trying swapping all those
components in and out with ME with out doing a format. It will not be done
cleanly.

Now to your original rant, turn off the Messenger service, if you are not
using it to send messages on your LAN/Network why have it running? Go to
control panel, administrative tools, services, scroll down to Messenger
service and disable through the properties.

.

I've been looking all day to shut those little gray boxes
called "Windows Messenger" off! I"m getting one about
every 3-4 minutes...I found one solution ( It didn't work
for me...always causes my windows xp program to freeze )
Here is what the post said ... go to 1. control panel 2.
open Adminstrative tools 3. open services 4. on windows
messenger right click 5. choose STOP .

I have the HP Pavilion 7915....and each time I get within
the admin tools clicking on services freezes everything.
I have to re-boot.

Does anyone else know how to get rid of those
messengers...I'm ready to call in the firing squad!!!
