Eliminating GETPIVOTDATA Excel formula

This is unbelievable that Excel 2003 does not have direct help on how t
turn-off the auto-generated GETPIVOTDATA formula when typing = and the
linking to pivot table data. Does anyone know how to turn this off?
And if not, does anyone know how to retain the end-result valu
produced when using this function in another file when the source pivo
table file is not open???

This formula can be useful in very specific cases, but is an extrem
nuisance in most cases. It is directly responsible for turning link
to #REF when the source file is not opened etc. This require
significant time changing links to values and then re-linkin
formulas.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

In Excel 2002, you can choose Tools>Customize, and from the Data
category on the Commands tab, add the Generate GetPivotData command to
one of your toolbars. Use this button to toggle the feature on and off.
