I am running Windows xp Home and in "my pictures" "my
documents" and other places I am getting a small icon
called thumbs d.b it has two small cogs adjoining each
other, one orange and one green on a white background
turned over on the top right corner. There is one in each
or my picture folders I usually delete the whole folder
when finished with them, but a message comes up which
states that these files are used by operating systems & by
various programes. editying or modifying could damage your
system. The files read db file date modifyed & the size.
These icons were never present in the quantity I have
now. What happens if I delete a picture folder containing
one of these files?
Are they here to stay or can they be eliminated?
Need help........Thanks!!

Is this the thumbnail database used to display thumbnails of each picyute in
a folder? I have that option switched off on my PC but cant recall how I did
that. Ah, a quick google gives this, here you go;
http://www.winnetmag.com/Article/ArticleID/26896/26896.html

which also tells you how to switch the feature off if you want

I've never understood why sites like that present registry hacks when the user interface is there
for easier use in Windows already. Alan, all you have to do is go to Folder Options in Control
Panel, look on the View tab and check "Do not cache thumbnails". You may need to go and delete the
existing thumbs.db files, but this should prevent any new ones being created. There's no harm in
deleting these files, they just store tiny versions of the images in the folder that Windows shows
you if you have thumbnails view on.
