editing my paragraph

I don't know how it starts but I'm trying to add or change a few letters or
words and ever letter I type replaces the letter in front of it and I will
replace letters and words I don't want to replace forcing me to retype the
entire paragraph how do I turn off this stupid thing that has no meaningful
use.
 
Try hitting your insert key. This turns on or off type over character.
