In WMP9 Media Library I open a playlist and select the entry
TITLE ARTIST ALBUM
Don't Elvis Presley Elvis: 30 #1 Hits ... etc

Question 1
----------
If I hit F2 to edit, and delete the Title, it instantly reappears as
'Elvis Presley - Don't'. What setting is causing that please, and
where is that revised title coming from

Question 2
----------
If I delete the Artist instead, that does *not* reappear.

I have the following settings in Options >Media Library > Automatic
media information updates for files:

-Update my music files (WMA and MP3 files) by retrieving missing
media information from the Internet (CHECKED)
-Only add missing information (CHECKED)
-Overwrite existing information (NOT CHECKED)
-Find media information for music copied with another program
(CHECKED)
-Rename and rearrange music using media information (CHECKED)

I would have expected the first of those to get Artist from the Web,
using my broadband connection? Is that where it gets the revised
Title? Doesn't seem so, as I couldn't detect any internet activity
after I deleted it.

Do you have this CD stored under c:\windows\cdplayer.ini? Antique
version of WMP used to look there too, iirc. Newer ones probably have a
(different, adn not text based) locally cached database. Both tie CD
index numbers to title and contents.

Can't be more specific, I avoid using WMP whenever possible (even old
and halfway working versions like WMP9).

Thanks, but no, it's not included in that file. (Never looked at that
before! Curious to know its purpose?)

What is your main player? Do you use same program for *organising*
your library? How about editing tags?

I mainly use MediaMonkey, but occasionally find myself returning to
WMP. I've held back on 'upgrading' to WMP10 as I've heard that it
implements more of the DMC restrictions with regards to serial
copying of media. And reports back what you are playing if the
'currently playing' option is selected.

If it's not there then it's in the .db (database) file I mentioned in
the other thread.

It's where old versions of Media player (and Winamp, and CDEX, and
DBPowerAmp, and a few other things) store CD contents.

I mainly use MediaMonkey, since it is one of the few applications which
permits you to have database entries without the music files being
present - i.e. you can rate CD tracks, without having to keep the tracks
ont he PC (or even without having to keep the CD around). And Virtual CD
mode is nice too, apart from the bugs. The database is straight
MSAccess, which means I can play with it myself (since I have Access
installed on my PCs for other purposes) - set up queries to rate albums,
artists, or whatever.

For conversion, and for playing oddball formats (and encoding them) I
use DBPowerAmp. I also use EAC, CDEX, Audiograbber, and various other
things sometimes.

WMP10 is just WMP9 with more bloat and more bugs, and some hooks to make
it easier for MS to sell you content.

Thanks for that solid follow-up.
