Edit with frontpage not displaying all pages in subweb

M

Michael

I am running IIS 5.0 on Windows 2000 SP4. I have
installed Frontpage extensions 2002. I have one website
with about 20 subwebs that other users post too. I have
set these sites up with frontpage server extensions. My
users edit their site (subweb) directly using either
frontpage 2000 or frontpage XP from their browser
(typically IE 6.0). However I have found a few websites
that a user authenticates to edit directly, they are able
to view all their pages. The problem is when they select
text inside of a page (let's say index.htm) and right
click and select hyperlink. They only see the current
page that they are on and no subfolders or html files on
the same level or below. Now the thing is that I tried
this from other computers and have no problems (as myself
who and the user). At first I thought it was frontpage
extensions so I recreated the subweb but this didn't
help. I also tried to reinstall frontpage extensions on
the server but this didn't make any difference. If my
user would click on pageview they can see all of their
pages/folder/ect. However when they try to update a
hyperlink they can only see the page that they are on and
no other folders. I have tested other subwebs in the
same web and they work properly.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What happen when they actually open the subweb directly in FP via File Menu
| Open Web?

When the user opens their web saved in their user
directory they can see all the pages and folders. When
they try and edit their web directly inside of IE with
Front Page Edit they authenticate and can see all the
files. The problem is when they try and add a hyperlink
they only can see their currect page and nothing else.
However I tried this from another computer both internal
and exteranl of our network as the same user and it works
correctly. I am starting to think that it is something
with front page on the local machine, but I can open up
some subwebs in the same website from their machine and
it works properly.

Any ideas?

Ok, compare the IE security settings with those of the machine that do not
have this problem.

I may have not clearly stated my response before. I
tested my issue two ways. On the computer that is having
issues:

I opened Frontpage XP. I then clicked open web and typed
in www.xxx.com/yyy (where xxx is my domain and yyy is my
subweb). It asks me to authenticate and I type in the
users name and password. It opens frontpage and I can
see all of the files and folders in the subweb. I select
some text inside the index.htm page and right click on
it. I select hyperlink. In the box I only have my
currect page available to select from (I can't see any of
the other folders or files).

I then tested this going directly to website
www.xxx.com/yyy (where xxx is my domain and yyy is my
subweb) and clicking on edit in front page from my
internet explorer browser. I authenticate and can see
all of the files and folders in the subweb. I select
some text inside the index.htm page and right click on
it. I select hyperlink. In the box I again only have my
currect page avaialbe (I can't see any of the other
folders or files).

I tested these same options with a few different websites
from the same computer. Some of them I would see all the
files and folders when I went to add a hyperlink and some
I would only see just the current page. I then went to
another computer and tested the same sites and all of
them worked properly. I was able to pull up all the
files/folders in both pageview and when I went to insert
a hyperlink for each of the websites including the ones
that where having issues on the other computer.

I looked at the internet explorer security settings and
everything appeared to be set the same. I first thought
it may be something wrong with the subweb since it was
not working and others where. That is why I recreated it
but still have the same results. Then when I tested it
from another computer and it was able to work this
basicly rulled out the subweb or server extensions being
a problem. Then the really odd thing was that some of
the subwebs in the site (www.xxx/zzz then zzz is another
subweb in the site) would work from either computer.
This is the part is is really stumping me.

Now I want my users to be able to edit their website
directly since they don't always have access to thier web
in their home directory. However if I open frontpage and
create a new web. I then import all their files and save
it to the local drive. I can then open the frontpage web
I just created locally and edit it and then publish it
using the built in frontpage ftp.

If you open the web via FP directly using File Menu | Open Web, do you see
this issue?

The best method is to always open the web directly in FP, not via IE's Edit
in FP function.

Do you mean that you use FP's http mode for publishing?

Because,FTP should never be used because it bypasses the FP extensions, so
the FP extensions are not aware of any changes to the site's content when
content is uploaded in this manner.

Yes I do mean using the built in FP HTTP mode for
publishing? My users do not use FTP to upload their
site. When I open the web directly by using the
following:

Open Frontpage XP, click on file, open web, put in
http://www.xxx.com/yyyy and then authenticate to the
site. I am able to see my entire site, open different
pages inside of folders or at the root of the site, add
new pages, ect. However when I try to add a hyperlink I
only see my current page that is open. Now if I open
multiple pages, let's say I have "index.htm"
and "test.htm" open. Now when I try to add a hyperlink I
can see both pages. From other computers I can see all
the folders and files when I try and add a hyperlink as
the same user and myself. From the specific computer(s)
that are causing problems the only thing that seems to be
consistent is that it does not display all the pages for
any user who is an administrator of the site.

This makes me think that the problem is machine specific
and something to do with frontpage on the local machine.
However I can try and edit some of the other sites
without the same issue, but their are others that have
the same problem as well.

When I open frontpage and select "file menu", "open web",
and I type in http://www.xxx.com/yyy, it will connect to
the webserver and ask for authentication. I authenticate
as a user that has administation rights to this subweb.
Frontpage pulls in all the files and I can see a list of
all of my folders, images, and html documents. I can
switch between the documents with any problems. I can
add information to a page and save it. That works
properly. I then view the website and the changes took
effect. Now when I select some text that I want to make
a hyperlink out of. I select the text and either select
insert/hyperlink or rightclick and select hyperlink. In
the dialog box the only page I see are the pages that I
currently have open in the web. However I am able to see
all the files and folders in page view. Now I have other
computers that are running windows xp and windows 98 that
have either frontpage 2000 or frontpage xp installed. It
seems that the frontpage 2000 computers I can run the
same senerio on and it works. I have tested this from
outside my network from my home computer that has windows
xp and frontpage xp installed, I can open any of the
sites and edit them without any problems. So far the
only thing that I can think of that I have not tested is
that my machine has office xp w/ frontpage and NO support
packs. Where I have the workstation on my network with
office xp and SP2. Do you know of any issue with this or
what may be causing the problem.

Inside the Look In dropdown I have the folder with the
name of my subweb. To give you an example I created a
subweb called user. Their website is
http://www.test.com/user (this is a madeup address). The
user can open their web and pull in all of their files.
In the hyperlink dialog box it says: Network places and
below that it has the webfolder www.test.com and inside
that the users subfolder is displayed called "user".
However only my current page is listed in the box below
to add a hyperlink.

Now the same senerio as above for some of my other sites
but it lists all of the files, images, folders, ect. in
the list under Network places, www.test.com, user (where
user is whatever I called the subweb).

Any other ideas.

-----Original Message-----
And what happens in the Look In (when you select it and
browse) in the hyperlinks dialog?

Make sure you have Existing File or Web page and Current Folder selected and your root web (or subweb) selected,
Then within the current web browse to a folder w/ files in it
