Edit JPG without destroying Comment or Caption?

Does anyone know of a graphics editor that will not destroy any JPG
Comment or IPTC Caption in the image please?

In (commercial) PaintShop Pro 8 if I crop a JPG which contains either,
it deletes them. In IrfanView, as reported in my earlier post, the
Comment survives but the IPTC Caption doesn't.

Try out Picasa or Xnview. These aren't full-fledged editors but you can
crop and save. Of course there are payware options too. Last I checked,
FastStone Image Viewer has no IPTC support.

Meanwhile here are a couple of pages that may be of interest to you, because
I have been researching the same issue.

Thanks. I'll check all the others out asap. But I posted on the Picasa
forum earlier today complaining that using it to edit (which is one
function for which I really *do* like Picasa) deleted my JPG Comments.

Terry, I think that even though Picasa deleted your JPEG comment, I think it
does preserve the IPTC Caption. I read a thread yesterday to that effect.

Too bad the graphics editor programmers don't have this all settled!

Backup your EXIF/IPTC metadata with <http://www.exifer.friedemann.info/>
Exifer for Windows. Edit your file(s). Restore your information.

Because many image processing software destroys this metadata when
saving such files, the idea was to create a backup of the metadata
before editing it in any software, and then, after that to restore it
back into the processed file. With Exifer you can do this very easily.

Thanks, good advice. Just doing my first backup and restore
experiments. If you or anyone here are EXIFER users, can you clarify
one basic point please? These EXI files are the backup files, yes? I
seem to get one for very JPG, in the same folder. But these disappear
after restoring. I *also* got an EXI created in D:\Program
Files\Exifer\exifbak. Yet, after the initial restore, I'm not being
offered any later opportunity to restore.

For example, I made another edit elsewhere, and that lost my
OIPTC/EXIF data. But, as I'd already done a restore earlier, the 'R'
tool is now greyed out. So what is the purpose of the EXI in
D:\Program Files\Exifer\exifbak please? And how do I use it?

I cannot you help there. I only use it to transfer metadata from
descript.ion files to exif and iptc.
