Instead of using ECDEDIT, is there an easier way to edit the
"Boot.ini" file please? i.e. using a text editor?

I have 2 copies on my systyem on different hard drives and want to
swap the default order but am struggling with BCDEDIT.

Download and install VistaBootPro:

I recommend EasyBCD by NeoSmart which is more user friendly and feature
rich:
EasyBCD by NeoSmart Technologies would be your answer, it provides a
graphical front end to the BCDEdit Command line that makes it easy for you
to define start-up settings and edit boot entries on the new Windows Server
2008/Vista boot manager. http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1
