i bought some ram on ebay described as

"PC 133 SDRAM 256MB from Wintec Industries. Didn't fit my computer.
Brand New "

i put it in my dell optiplex gx1, and it doesn't work. any ideas why?
i checked beforehand, and i think it should work.

Optiplex GX1 specs:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ban_gx1/specs.htm

As it uses the 440BX chipset, I expect that it requires low-density 256 MB
memory. I don't know whether all low-density RAM is like that I've had, but
mine had 16 chips per DIMM. (That would be 18 for ECC.)

If your new RAM has 8 chips, it's probably the newer sort, and incompatible.
The only good news would be that it could still be perfectly good RAM, but
in another PC.

Sorry that I can't be more encouraging.

Address scarmbled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

They make two types of 256MB RAM, 32x8 and 16x8, and your motherboard can
only use the 16x8.

Get the part number off it and check here for which one you've got

http://www.wintecindustries.com/orderdesk/products/productcategory.aspx?category_id=1733

I'm afraid you've got one of the 32x8 sticks that won't work.

how is 16x8 considered 256mb ram when it's only 128mb

That's the chip organization and is 16x8 for 128 mega-->BIT<---.

8 of them make up a 128 megaBYTE bank and 2 banks make a 256megaBYTE module.

so you're saying there are 16 black rectangles on my chip?

I have no idea what your memory is. Get the part number off it and look it
up at the site link I posted.

You have to use older type ram on the BX boards. Go to Crucial.com. They can
tell you exactly what kind of memory will work on the BX chipset.

BX is an Intel designation for the type of chipset,Northbridge/Southbridge
combination used on motherboards that support the P2 and P3 CPU's. Some
companies used those letters in the names of their motherboards like the
Abit BX133.
