Eating up hard drive!

I have reinstalled XP Pro for the third (reformatted the
drive each time) time run all the diagnostic Worm checks
and Virus checks and cannot for the life of me figure why
XP is using over 1.7 gigs of hard drive space. The only
software on this partition is XP. Further more when I
try to install windows SP1 it only registers 2 megs of
hard drive left, yet when I reboot I have over 300 megs.
Any thought? I am at the limit of my abilities.
