Easy CD Creator and windows 2000

Some years ago I installed Easy CD Creator and it completely screwed up my
system: No patches would either fix the software or get the OS working again
until I uninstalled it. A manufacturer (it might even have been Adaptec)
told me that this was a known problem and that it wouldnt work

I just got a DVD-RW device which comes with some newest version of this
(now) Roxio software and I was wondering if I might suffer the same
consequences as I dont seem to remember anything ever being patched. Is this
a known problem any more and if so, is there now a known cure? Or does
this problem arise with the DVD version of Easy CD Creator? The one I have
bundled with this hardware is Easy CD Creator Version 5 basic DVD-RW Version
1.0 and something called DEX DVD-RW Roxio Movie Creator

It's no better now than it was then, at least not on W2K. I got a top
of the line Plextor DVD/CD RW about 6 months ago and it came bundled
with Roxio. I knew darn better but against my better judgment I
installed it because I wanted to use the drive. PURE HELL!!! Next to
impossible to get rid of, wants to start a pile of services just to run,
wants total control on all the cd drives, can't copy/write without
hassles, needs an eternity to write even small jobs, and the list goes
on. The best thing to do with that Roxio cd is break it in half...

I've never had a problem with roxio as long as I followed their install
instructions to the letter.

I have been using Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum on Windows 2000 Professional,
and have used it from SP2 to SP4.

As other repliers have stated, it does put a few things in startup
(DirectCD etc.) but as I never used DirectCD-style CD writing I removed it
without a problem.

I have always ensured to apply any program updates from Roxio, and can't
say I've had any problems with it, or any caused by it.

I get the impression that YMMV as some people like it, others don't.

If in any doubt, take a backup/image of the system before installing.

" followed their install instructions to the letter".

I am in the camp with John John: Which bit of the instructions did we get
wrong? I experienced all his problems and worse. All I did was to put the
install disc in and let the automatic install process follow its course. As
I remember it, I had to run scanreg / restore and hope that there was a
registry from before the install. I am now exceptionally reluctant to try
it again thinking that the DVD program is any different from the CD Creator
one now that someone has told me it isnt? WHere did we go wrong in not
following any instruction to the letter? What causes it to want to start a
pile of services just to run when no other CD writing software does this? To
want total control on all the cd drives (which is going to stop my Sony CD
Writer running Sony CD Extreme, - which has NEVER given any problems) etc?

Did you get any co-operation from Plextor on replacing it with anything that
worked or what software did you eventually use to get the drive working?

Yes, now that you mention it, it did put DirectCD in my startup folder and I
couldn't get rid of it and could never figure out what on earth it was
supposed to do which Easy CD Creator didnt do. (Luckily I now have
systemworks which will monitor the installation and hopefully get rid of the
WHOLE installation if it doesn't work)

* I don't really know since I don't even know what version you're talking
about.

really.

I never bothered asking Plextor, maybe I should have. You're quite
right when you say that Roxio doesn't like to "share". It wants the
whole turf and doesn't like having any other writing software in the
picture. The thing has assured me a place in hell with all of the
cursing that I made every time I used it. Also, those who use Direct CD
aka "Drag & Drop" might want to read what these guys think about it.
http://www.answersthatwork.com/ (Look in the Task List for Directcd).

I use Alcohol 120% for images and Nero for the rest. To tell you the
truth it's rather rare that I do images so Alcohol is just gathering
dust. IMO Nero runs like a charm compared to Roxio. It's so easy and
uncomplicated and it goes way faster. What Nero can do in 5 minutes
Roxio needs 20 minutes to do. Then Roxio needs another half hour just
to eject the stupid disk! Of course while Roxio is figuring out how to
open the drive tray you can't use your other drives... grrrr! I also
downloaded DeepBurner which on paper seems to be good, but I didn't try it.

I've never seen any version of Easy CD Creator (either when it was
Adaptec's or Roxio's product) cause any problems on any WinNT, Win2K, or
WinXP machine, provided it was the correct version for the OS. I'd be
very surprised if you have any problems with it.

Hi,

........DirectCD.......could never figure out......which Easy CD Creator
didnt do.

Direct CD was the portion that lets the CD view and play just like a
fixed disk. I also dumped Roxio too.

Hang about, let me get this straight: Can one use Cd writing software to
burn a 4.7 gig DVD or did you find some Nero DVD software? I had Nero with
the predecessor to this drive from the same manufacturer and asked them if
there was anything I could use if I coulndt get Roxio to work with windows
2000 (they denied that there was anything wrong with their bundled software)
I cant see what difference there could be but is there no difference except
the number of the megabytes at the bottom of the screen NOT stopping because
it gets to some 700 MB limit?

I use Sony ExtremeCD on my Sony burner and it works like a dream, it's only
technical problem being that you apparently can't burn a coaster with it.
(at least I have never managed it) And it is much easier than Nero.

I wonder if there is any way I can get it to burn the DVDs? At the moment it
sees the DVD drive but I can't even get it to recognise the DVD drive as
being burnable? Is this a quiestion for a Warez or Crakz group?

J

John John

Well I don't know about older Nero versions but the current version and
the one just before can burn DVDs. You select "Make Video Disk" and it
writes to DVDs, in fact if you stick a CD R/RW in the drive when you're
using the function it tells you something along the line that it can't
write to the disk and to insert a proper disk in the drive, stick a DVD
in the drive and away it goes.

I've been using Easy CD Creator 5 with Windows 2000 without problems for a
couple of years now. This week however, my CD-RW drive decided to become a
CD-R drive. I can read data from any CD just fine, but if I try to record to
the CD from Easy CD Creator it says "There is no CD Recorder available on
this system", or something similar. I've also tried drag-and-drop from
Windows Explorer (which also used to work), and I get an error message saying
the drive is not accessible. My drive is a LG combo drive, part number
GCC-4320B. I've updated to the latest versions of everything (Windows 2000,
firmware for the drive, Easy CD Creator), and still no change. Any
suggestions?
