e-mail word attachment

I receivd a word attchment in my e-mail. I saved it on my desktop and when I
opened the attachment it opened word with the following error message
Error 1706 set up cannot find files required. when I clicked OK word
started to blink on my task bar. When i clicked on that it had box that said
on top "Convert file from" and a list of various text to pick. On any that I
picked in opened garbled and said This file must be conversted to BinHex
4.0.What does that mean and How do I do that .

You do have Word installed? If yes, the you may have received a Word
document from a newer version of Word than the one you currently have
installed on your PC.

Ask whoever sent the email to resend it in plain text. Problem solved.

I went to article297834. I have the cd rom and when prompted i installed.
however the problem remains. another article 140906 mentioned using a third
party shareware to decode. crossePAC, PC BinHex 1.3, Stuffit Expander 1.0 for
Windows andWinpak Deluxe v.71. How do I use those tools?

I thought Word documents were all backwards-compatible?
