Hello,

I am trying out my first DWT file... I created the first page and now I
want to create a "child" page for that homepage. When I copied and pasted to
create the child page, it also has a .dwt extenstion. Is this correct? Will
all the pages be .dwt files?

Thanks,

No - That is not the way to use a DWT
You need to apply it to normal .htm pages
See the DWT articles at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/CH010504771033.aspx
