DVDRW stops XP from responding

I have trouble reading cd's with my DVD burner. When a cd
is inserted in the drive XP freezes, keyboard an mouse
does not respond no matter how long I wait. This happens
either when I insert a cd first time or when I exchange
cd's when installing programs.
So far I've done the following with no result:
Exchanged the DVD writer,
exchanged the IDE cable,
removed and reinstalled the secondary ide channel (the
DVD writer is master on second channel)

Anyone had the same experience?

I have the same problem. If you open eject the disk,
Windows should return to normal. However, there are
additional issues that I have just sent to tech support.
I will post the solution when I ahve one.

What writer are you using... and, what cable are you
using to connect it with? UDMA cable or the older, most
dvdwriters use udma now, also, check for firmware updates
on your writer. I had a similar problem w/an IO magic
drive, however, it just woudnt read DVD, or write them
for that matter, I did everything in my power to fix
it... installed the latest chipset drivers for my board,
latest bios for m.b. and updated to the latest firmware
on drive. No fix, returned it, got a slightly revised
ver. No problems since.

I have two writers, one NEC ND-110 and a new LG 12x
something. Both behave the same way so I don't think it's
a hardware problem. I'm going to reinstall XP to see if
that helps.
As for the IDE cable I think you should use the standard
(old) one, it worked before.

Yes i have gotten a new motherboard on here and it stil don't work. the thing locks up and you have to shut the computer off, then it will recognize the cd's, sometimes. This is a continued experience of freezing up. The mouse don't work, the keyboard don't , xp freezes up too.
