I have tried to copy a dvd, but my computer is not
registering the blank dvd (4.7gb). when i put a standard
700mb disk in this works ok. i am using nero.

also when i try to play a dvd my windows media player
says the codec requires updating

Windows XP doesnt support DVD writing in it, so contact Nero to solve your
biggest problems.

For the codec you must have a software DVD decoder installed. This is not
included with Windows XP or WMP. PowerDVD and WinDVD are the most popular.

a) You're do have a DVD burner and not just a CD burner don't you?

b) Reinstall PowerDVD, WinDVD or whatever you use and check their websites
for updates.

i have been tryin to figure out how to burn a downloaded
dvd on a DVD-R 4.7GB and i dont know if i have the right

You need to go buy any DVD burning software. you can't use XP's, it's not
for burning DVD's.
