DVD writer not showing in My Computer

I am running XP Home on an HP 515n. I am trying to
install an HP DVD Movie writer 3000 and it will not show
in My computer. It WILL work fine on an identical
machine. Any suggestions? I have uninstalled and
reinstalle dthe device and the software and the drivers
and everything else I can think of. I am able to get a
USB hub to work on the failing machine but not the writer.

Can you still access the drive though?

For instance if you created the drive and it was
labelled 'E:' try typing 'E:\' in a browser/explorer
without the quotes and see if its accessible, if its not
then it could be the fact that the device didnt install
properly

To check, press start and right click my computer and
select properties, go to the hardware tab and select
device manager, and expand the DVD/CD-Rom drives and see
if its installed, if it is, right click it and click
properties, check to see if it says 'This device is
working properly' if it is. then reply back ok

Good luck

By your mention of the USB hub are we to assume this is an external DVD
burner? If yes, when you have problems installing is it connected to the
hub or directly to the computer? If it is connected to the hub, try
connecting it directly to the computer. Some USB devices have problems
being recognized by the system when connected to hub.

The hub has been disconnected and still it doesn't show.
I cannot access it at all even though it appears in
Device Manager. The USB device has the ! but on the
other machine it works fine with that. I just can't see
it or access it in Explorer.

Really not sure. If you've removed the software and reinstalled, perhaps
there's an updated driver at the HP website that might address the issue.

Conversely, you may have something on this computer that is blocking access
for some reason. Are you installing from an administrator account? You
might try shutting down any security software on the machine, firewall,
antivirus, etc.

You may have to check with HP on this issue.
