DVD RW Drive not working - MAJOR PROBLEM

G

Guest

My DVD RW drive was not being recognized by Windows as a
DVD drive let alone a DVD RW. Model is Sony DW U-14A.

Under advice i flashed it to the DRU 50 version (as the U-
14A is the OEM version of that) and the same problem
occurs.

Windows only sees it as a CD Rom drive, it shows the
model and make but will not see it as a DVD RW drive.

Help?

Oh yeah, i have the latest firmware from sony, 1.0d and
that did not fix the fault.

I dont think any came with it. Or at any rate I have lost
it. Is there somewhere to download the software? I've
tried the firmware but the driverS?

Did you load the software that came with the DVD drive?
Windows does not recognize DVD's natively.

No, it's the DVD burning software that is being talked about. XP cannot
burn to a DVD, you must use third party burning software like Roxio EZCD/DVD
Creator v6 or EMV which is v7 or Nero, or Sonic MyDVD etc.

To play a DVD you'll also need the DVD decoding software... something like
WinDVD or PowerDVD. Look through the box the drive came in.... There should
be a CD included.

Glad to see you got the flash to work alright. The retail version of
that drive has much better support than the OEM version.

Try this though: Click Start-Run-Type devmgmt.msc and click Ok. Now go
down and expand DVD\CD Drive and tell me what it recognizes your drive
as. The drive will only show up in My Computer as whatever type of media
you have in it.

Finally, if all else fails, you can try doing a repair operation on Windows.

Look at your CD drive and look at the connection from the CD to your
DVD.
If the cable is connected from the CD-drive direct on the DVD then
your DVD is still regonize by Windows.
Don't worry Windows see your DVD drive.

Other wise delete the DVD drive (look at: CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM,
HARDWARE) and remove the DVD drive. Then click on ADD HARDWARE
and Windows find automatic the DVD drive.
Don't change the land code from the DVD and CDRom.
This wil automaticly regonized by Windows

Good luck

Do you have a drive letter assigned?

Right click on My Computer and select Manage. On the following screen,
click on Disk Management. It should appear on the right hand side of the
screen.

Do you have your computer completely up to date (Windows Update)? Also,
does this drive get recognized by your BIOS? When you boot up your
computer, does it show up in there as a generic CD Rom or does it show
up as a Sony DRU-510A?

Make sure you try what Cari said as that is very important as well.
Windows should do that automatically for you, but maybe it didn't ;)

Yep: Drive E: as it aways has been. The proble I think is
that Windows thinks my DVD RW Drive is a generic CD Rom
Drive, only manufactured by Sony and called the DRU-510A.

Have you exhausted all of your solutions - this is kinda
a big problem for me.

Not done yet. Do these three things:

First, tell me if you see your DVD Burner in the BIOS when the computer
boots up. This can be from the POST screen or if you enter the BIOS. If
you enter the BIOS, make sure you have set all of your IDE settings to
automatic. Also, in Windows, use NeroInfoTool to see what it says about
your drive and maybe post that here too if possible. Available here:
http://www.nero.com/en/631940826989307.html

Second, remove everything you can find about your DVD Burner from Device
Manager, etc, and REBOOT. Now Windows should automatically load the
drivers and hopefully fix the problem. Also, make sure you try the Add
New Hardware Wizard. Also, in device manager, try setting you IDE
Controllers to DMA Mode if Available under Properties of IDE Channels.

Finally, try some of these links and see if any of them help:

Only thing i could see out of the ordinary on the Nero
Infotool was the ASPI installation for windows was
corrupted. Would this affect it at all. all the other
information, drive write speeds etc, was present and
correct.
