DVD Region Not Selected

I need to put the item, DefaultDVDRegion into the registry, and am still
trying to figure out how to add a binary 1 to the value for Region 1. Anybody
know how to add a binary 1 in a registry entry? The fix above takes care of
restoring a DVD player to operation. My Memorex DVD Recorder/Player has
worked fine for years, but lately it won't recognize DVD discs. After
Checking in Device Manager, it seems the manufacturer had never set any
region, and Windows XP will not allow you to set this to Region 1. Instead it
tells you that you don't have the necessary privideges to do this. To correct
the Problem, you need to make a registry entry about the Default region by
adding DefaultDVDRegion to the DVD area in the registry. Right now I need how
to enter the binary 1. Have never made a regitry entry with any Of my Windows
XP computers, and the information that I have found is not much help.

Presuming we are talking a new, retail drive legally acquired, it would be
unheard of for a manufacturer to forget to set a default region. The DVD
region is stored in the drive's firmware. Is it possible that the firmware
in your drive is corrupted, possibly through an incomplete update? Contact
Memorex technical support for assistance.

My Default Region is not set on my DVD-ROM drive.

I have never played any DVDs since installing Windows XP. I do not have any
DVD Decoder software. I did when I had Windows 98, but it wasn't compatible
with XP.

Unfortunately Memorex did send this DVD Recorder/Player without a Region
selected. Right now I am ready to assign Region 1 to it, but need to know how
to set the Binary 1 in the Registry. I have never done that before. I know
what I want to do, and have gotten to the Registry, but when it asks me to
enter the Binary number, and I am presented with the box to enter it, not
sure what the binary code one is. How many zero sets to I need, and does the
one have to be on the left or the right., I.E.,

10 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 or 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01, or something else
altogether. If anyone has any help on this, it would be much appreciated.

For the record, if the Region is not selected, Windows XP at my upgrade
level will not allow me to set the Region to 1. I have to do it through the
registry entry.
DefaultDVDRegion.

I was looking at some other registry entries, and it looks like the binary
value 1 is set by 31 00 00 00. If that is right, let me know, and then I can
get my DVD player back in action

DefaultDvdRegion should be a REG_DWORD. 1 is 1. It is hexadecimal and it
will appear as 0x00000001 (1).

Double click DefaultDvdRegion and enter a 1 in the Value data box in the
Edit window.

I will try what you suggest, but on the microsoft web site, it says to use a
binary number. I really wanted to know what equals a one in binary, and was
looking for that. The DVD player worked with previous updates of Windows XP,
and then all of a sudden it didn't, and that is when I discovered that the
Region hadn't been set to anything. Device Manager will not let you reset to
a different number when no number has been set. Sounds like what microsoft is
advising is a "Work Around" to a problem that was created with a Windows XP
update.

Also when it asks you to enter the binary number, a couple of zeros show up,
and was not sure how to handle that.

I discussed the problem by e-mail with memorex, and they requested that I
call them on their support line. There they told me that they didn't have
anything to help since I had installed the very latest firmware update. I
have an older DVD Recorder/Player made by HP that was shipped with my
computer, and it is set properly to Region 1. I would expect that any new DVD
recorder shipped today would be set to some region. I think that the reason
that they didn't set a region is that they might not have know where a given
DVD player would be sold. When I first got the Memorex, it worked fine and
did so for over a year or more. It only "lost it's memory" due to some
Windows XP update. I update my computer every time Microsoft makes a change
since I have it set for auto update.
