Andreas

All of a sudden my laptop's combo drive stopped working: In device manager I
see:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39).

The drive itself is ok as I can use it to boot and enter Windows setup.
Before this, my drive was fine.
I tried to restore the system even to very long time back when the drive
used to work for sure but still it cannot start. This must have to do with a
bug, otherwise it would work when I recovered the system back in time.

Also note that I have a virtual driver for SCSI cdrom drive but I am not
sure from which device this came but it shows exactly the same status

Found it, though I can't understand why and under what circumstances it
occurs
:
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak"
"LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the
registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.
