DVD Drive missing from My Computer - Re-submitted to fit screen

Hi all! Hope someone can help me out... I put a DVD into
my burner and immediately when the door closed, it lost
all power and shut down (the dvd drive) Now My Computer
does not show my dvd drive. Win Hardware Manager does
not show optical drives. Burning software runs as if
there never was a burner and wants to burn image to
file. No prior problems other than slow peformance
(taking about 2 hours to burn a full dvd of pictures)
which seemed remedied by a re-format of the hard drive
about 3 months ago.

I'm running XP Home SP3. A month ago, installed office
2003. Drive is an HP dvd740 , lightscribe burner. Came
with the pc 4 or 5 years ago.

Restart doesn't help. I verified it's not a virus on the
hard drive or dvd disk. System Restore to a point 3 days
before the failure did nothing. I tried download and
installing new driver, but windows responded "cannot
update drivers, device not found to update" (or
something like that, I forget exact wording.) I deleted
the lower filter keys in the registry with no effect.
There was no upper filter to delete.

I suspect the drive may have packed it in??? I don't
know how to tell/test & Google hasn't been much help.

Anybody feel like being my hero? Thanks!

Erin, I have to think that the HP drive is functionless given the age.
But, go below and when there select WinXP Fixes>rt column>
ten down. Restore Dvd/Cd drives to Explorer. Download the file and rt
click and select Merge.
