Looking to make personal copy of DVD movies that I have rented. Any
recommendations for free shareware rippers? Thanks in advance

That's illegal but I think its legal to copy TV shows including TV movies,
at least for now, but I did read that sometime in the future, you can't even
copy the TV shows anymore.

DVD Shrink is software to backup DVD discs.
You can use this software in conjunction with DVD burning software of your
choice, to make a backup copy of any DVD video disc.
DVD Shrink will also burn your backup DVD, if you have installed the latest
version of Nero. You can download a demo version of Nero here. If you
already possess alternative burning software and prefer to stick with it,
then you can still use DVD Shrink. The output from DVD Shrink can be saved
as files on your hard drive, which you can then burn with software of your
choice.

DVD Shrink is free software. You should never pay for DVD Shrink.
Specifications:

DVD Shrink - DVD Ripping and Backup
Latest Version - 3.2.0.15
Operating System Support - Windows 9x/2000/XP
License - Freeware

Agree with others that DVD Shrink is great! Head over to videohelp.com
or afterdawn.com and have a look around to see what's
freeware/shareware.

In the shareware realm, I'd go with SlySoft's combo -- AnyDVD and
CloneDVD:

Now lets reword this to what he actually means....

I am a thief. Not only am I a theif but I am stupid too. I am looking
for software to allow me to theive films. Please can you aid and abet
me in carrying out this crime?

DVD shrink is absolutely great! When used with the latest (version 6
onwards?) it will even write the movie onto a blank DVD automatically - if
you don't have the latest Nero or you use another burner programme you can
still burn the DVD files manually if the software has this function. A
fantastic feature of DVD Shrink is how it 'shrinks' the original movie to
fit onto a standard 4.7g blank disc without noticeable loss of quality and
keep all the formatting (menus, scenes, etc) of the original - no need to
use overpriced double layer discs for those longer films!!! DVD shrink is
freeware - however, copying commercial DVD movies is illegal and something I
cannor support.

Quality loss is very noticable on longer films. I tend to use re-author
mode and cut end credits.

Also DVDDecryptor is the best ripping solution (until Sony or whoever has
the source code now work out how to stop it).

1. Rip with DVD Decrypter
2. Re-author with DVD Shrink and set output to Burn with DVDDecrypter.
