DVD & CD Burners seen as CD-ROM

Some weeks ago my system, XP Home, went haywire, for instance both the
DVD & CD burners appeared as CD-ROMs. I decided to reformat, update to
SP2 and re-install everything. That went okay and for a while the
drives apppeared as burners. Now, for no reason I can think of, they
are back to CD-ROMs. When I try to burn anything I get a message
saying that there's no disk in either drive, if I put an audio, or
video disk into the drives I cannot play them.

I really don't want to go through all the nausea of re-re-installing
because this clearly could happen all over again. The system has been
kept up t date with EZ-AV anti-virus.

Any suggestions?

David

Sometimes after installing certain programs a burner (no matter if it's a CD
or DVD) is changed to just a reader, and not a writer... I suggest you check
the properties of the drive (go in to my computer, and right click on the
burner drive, then click properties. Once you are in properties, click on
RECORDING, and make sure the box is checked to enable recording on the
device. I hope this helps you.

Try this. Right Click on My Computer and choose Manage. Then in
Computer Management look at Device Manager/DVD CD Rom Drives and
uninstall whatever is there and reboot. XP should reinstall them
correctly when it boots.

This technique has bailed me out of a few fouled up devices before.but
I've never tried it with CD Rom's.

Good luck.

I tried it, and the suggestion form Kruzer1488, neither worked.. When
I went into the properties of the drives there was no Recording tab.
So I deleted the DVD drives in Device Manager and re-booted. The
"found new hardware" balloons popped up. "Memorex DVD RW...". Looked
good, but a moment later the caption changed to "CD ROM". The balloon
popped up again for the Sony DVD burner, same thing happened.

So I guess I'm still looking for suggestions. I could re-format and
re-install everything, but I haven't added any new hardware or
software so there's no guarantee that it wouldn't happen again. Any
other ideas?
Thanks
