I prefer NERO 8.3.6 (that's the latest version)

Nero 7 and below had many problems with vista.. or should I say vista was
the real problem.

Not true -- Nero 7.8 works fine with Vista -- XP also.

Seems to me like a basic utility that should be included with the
operating system.

Both the two major players Roxio and Nero work well enough with Vista
IF you get the versions designed for Vista. XP versions don't work
well if at all with Vista for several reasons. I've used Roxio Easy
Media Creator 9 to create hundreds of custom DVD's. Having both of
these on the same computer often causes problems. They don't get along
well together and conflict with each other.

I hope you're not confusing DVD Authoring, with DVD Burning. Two
separate tasks. For anything beyond very basic authoring neither Roxio
or Nero are very acceptable in they are both crude and limited.
However, like I said both easily manage the actual "burning" of a DVD
or CD. So again does lots of shareware and even a few freeware
products. The key is BE SURE whatever you pick was designed for Vista.

If you just want to burn CDs and DVDs ImgBurn is all you need. I works
great in Vista and is very simply to use. This is not a Roxil/Nero
alternative, just a very good burner without the bloat.

Oh, and it's free! :)

Actually I may need both, burning software, which i got some good info from
the newsgroup, but I may also need authoring software too. I have an old
version of DVD Shrink 3.2 that worked with Nero on my XP machine, but I
havnt installed it on my Vista machine.......thanks for all the help

Not true... all the 7.x series was infested with a multitude of vista
compatibilities problems...

I have seen so many I don't care to remember.. LOL

From 8.x and up those were sorted out..
Liar! That you are not able to get it to run properly is no surprise.
You don't know what your doing. You're technically incompetent, as we
all know.
Your incompetence makes you angry & hateful.
Best you just get lost as we all know you're a real loser.

If you make your own videos or do extensive editing of commercial
videos for playback then place them on DVDs one of the best and
affordable Video Editing/DVD Authoring tools is simply called Vegas,
produced by a division of Sony located in Madison Wisconsin.

Even their entry level watered down version (Movie Studio) is far
smarter, better than most anything out there and it is rock solid
stable...even under Vista. ;-) I've used the pro version for years.

It is a full package that does the editing, and DVD Authoring
including support for Chapters and multiple motion menus. Priced at
about the same as Nero or Roxio and offers way more useful features.

ok it says cdburner XP. Will a program w/an XP name work in Vista. Vista is a
new beast unto itself.

That is exactly the point. Vista Bus. Ed. does not have it. I was wondering
if I d/l it will it work. Or does Vista Bus. Ed. need a 3rd party prog.

Another lame decision by Microsoft. Vista business version does not
come with the DVD burning applet that is included on Vista Home
Premium and Ultimate. You can't download it and need a third party DVD
burning application. Be aware that since the vast majority of DVD's
are burned using the MPEG-2 format and that is a LICENSED codec not
all DVD burning software provides the necessary MPEG-2 encoder/decoder
or they offer a knock off that isn't licensed that might present it's
own set of issues. Make sure whatever you purchase does include a
licenses MPEG-2 codec (encoder/decoder), or you're up the creek
without a paddle.

I recommend Sony's line of video editing software. I've used their
products for years and they are first rate. All seem to work well
under Vista and even their entry level products a feature backed and
based on their award winning Vegas.

Unless you need professional tools (I use the full blown Vegas Pro)
most people only need one of the lessor Studio versions which includes
DVD Architect Studio which allows you to do DVD Authoring; the
"creative" side of putting interactive thumbnails, chapters, different
audio tracks, etc.. on your home brew DVD's. It includes one of the
best MPEG-2 encoders you can buy from Main Concept, a German company
that also has a line of video editing software.

Thanks for the feeback.
I had also considered upgrading this to Ultimate so I will have the bells &
whitles.
But that seems to be for down the road. Using one of the packaged s/w progs.
HP did include (Cyberlink DVD Suite) w/help from their support people, I was
able to burn the disc. I do agree leaving DVD maker out of Bus. Ed was a
bonehead move. But MS has never been known for making smart moves <g>.
