DVD burner only treats CD's

All of a sudden my DVD burner no longer reads and burns DVD media only CD
media ?!

Windows XP doesn't have built-in DVD reading/recording software that's why
the software is necessary.
 
The DVD burner shows no DVD content, with CD no problem. The DVD reader shows
all and is still working.

The problem appeared when Sonic Recordnow was burning a DVD; the program
failed!

My system : XP Home SP2 with Windows Defender installed
 
Have you tried uninstalling the drive then reinstalling? Maybe there is
something in the cache that's blocking any further functionality.
That's strange, never heard of that one.

Finally it all turned out as a hardware problem; drive is changed by another
one.
