DVD appears as CD-ROM in My Computer - Sony Laptop

I have a DVD drive that can read CD-ROMs, but not DVDs (data or video). On
another XP Pro system, the DVD drive appears in My Computer as a 'DVD
Drive'. On the problem system (a Sony PCG-560K laptop), the DVD drive
appears as a 'CD Drive'. This would seem to indicate that XP is not
recognizing the DVD drive.

On the laptop, if I click on the 'CD Drive' properties, and click on
Hardware, the drive is identified as a TORiSAN DVD-ROM DRD-U824 and the type
of drive is DVD/CD-ROM, both of which appear to be correct.

Elsewhere I read that if the DVD drive is correctly installed, it will show
up in Media Player under Tools | Options | DVD. The DVD option does not
appear when I run Media Player.

Without DVD codecs, you cannot read from a DVD. You can just purchase the
codecs if you do not want the whole package... www.intervideo.com

Do you need DVD codecs to read data DVD's?

To clarify, I am not trying to view DVD movies, just read DVD data disks.
