Duplicating Auto Numbers

I have a table with the primary key as an auto number. When I try to add new
records the auto number that is generated is an already existing number. No
new records are being added because I am getting the duplicate value on a
primary key message. My highest number used is only in the 100's but numbers
are being regenerated in the 40's. Has anyone ever experienced this problem
and how was it corrected? I really appreciate the time taken to help me out.
