duplicate page numbers in different sections

I have a long document (~40 sheets) with several sections. I have put the
page numbers in the footers and ensured that all the page numbers continue
from the previous section.
However over a couple of the sections the page numbering goes like this:

17 - 18 - 19 - 20 - 21 - 22 - 17 - 23 - 24 There are section breaks between
all of these pages as this is a template for larger documents. The page
number on both page 17s is set to continue from the previous section.

Please can someone tell me what is going on?

Thanks

Carl

I've seen this happen awhile ago (Word 97 ?) when columns were added to a
page. Word inserts a section break before & after the columns and restarts
page numbering, but when you view the header/footer the little section in the
middle isn't visible. [Not sure why it would carry on from page 17 but that's
another story.]

I suggest you flick through the header/footers and carefully check that the
section ~numbers~ are what you expect. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a
hidden section tucked away in there that you didn't realise exists.

Carl,
did you ever solve your problem? I have a very similar problem. I have
single column sections (generally level 1 and 2 headers) followed by text in
two columns. This is repeated through the document. However, despite being
familar with pagination and its settings, my page numbers go: 1, 2, 2, 2, 1,
2, 3, and so on.

I have followed Aelfgifu's suggestions, but to no avail.
