Duplicate emails

Am receiving duplicate emails(very annoying!). This has only started
happening. The email scanning in my security software is turned of.
Does anyone have a solution for this.

As a test, try it again after uninstalling your antivirus completely.

After turning it off, remove your mail account, close and reopen WinMail and
then add the mail account back again. See if that works.

Otherwise, see Gary's post and try uninstalling it. See

What anti-virus?
Norton and McAfee are not compatible with proper operation of Vista,
especially WinMail.

found that Vista installed my user account data in Winmail two times...I
removed one of the identities and it fixed the "sending two emails at the
same time problem"

The stock response to this problem seems to be to check that you do not have
any duplicate email accounts listed under Tools>Accounts. But this solution
does not make it clear what you should do if you have multiple email
addresses with the same ISP, all listed under the same mail box number!

Neither does it make it clear that if you go to tools > accounts and delete
all but the main email account you have with that ISP, Windows Mail will no
longer list those email addresses in the drop down boxes when creating a new
email - which means that you would no longer be able to send an email from
the deleted "accounts"!!

As a workaround, I believe you would be better off just to go to tools >
accounts and highlight all but your ISP's main email address and click
properties. Then under the General Tab, simply UNCHECK "include this account
when receiving mail or synchronising". I have done this and then sent myself
several test emails from and to each of my three ISP email addresses - and
all the emails were still sent and received as usual!

Furthermore, by using this method instead of actually deleting those email
addresses from your Windows Mail Accounts, all your ISP email addies will
still appear in your drop-down boxes - allowing you to choose from which
email addie you wish to send your message!!! Very useful if you like to use
one for family and friends and the others for various other groups of
contacts!

I am curious why you posted the same response three times?

The scenario you describe is not really a "duplicate" account.

E

Essexbiker

To satisfy everyone's curiosity, I "posted" the same response three times
because unlike on all previous occassions, I did not get the confirmation
message that my response had been submitted! Therefore, believing that it had
not been posted successfully, I re-entered it. Again, I did not get the
confirmation message, so re-entered it again. But if you think that makes me
an idiot Mr VanderMolen, then that is your prerogative.

As to your second point, please note that I did not claim that the scenario
I described was the same as that presented by having a duplicate account!
However, surely having two or more email adresses that come under the same
ISP account name (or in my case number) and which consequently require the
same password to be entered when setting up an account in Windows Mail, DOES
have the same effect as having DUPLICATE accounts listed when it comes to
receiving emails into your Windows Mail inbox?

But whilst it may be true that if you deleted all but your first and main
email address from your Windows Mail Accounts list, you would still receive
the emails sent to all the addresses under that Mailbox, is it not also true
that if you do this you will be able to SEND emails through Windows Mail ONLY
from your main email address and NOT from the email addresses you have
deleted from your Accounts list? I believe this to be true, as I deleted one
address and then when I tried to create a new mail, that address no longer
appeared in the drop-down box! That is why I offered the workaround!

And I sincerely hope that all those who still wish to be able to send emails
from any of the email addresses they have created with their ISPs, will find
the workaround useful? And that I may therefore be excused for offering it?

You didn't get a confirmation, because you're using the horrible web
interface, instead of directly accessing these newsgroups with Windows Mail,
or some other newsreader.

E

Essexbiker

Oh, I'm sorry, please forgive me! But as I have always used IE to visit this
newsgroup and to respond to posts and have previously always seen the
confirmation message, I had not realised that I would no longer see this
confirmation now that I am using Vista Home Premium and IE7! How very silly
of me!

But thank you so much for enlightening me....even if your tone does seem a
little condescending - as was the tone Mr VanderMolen's adopted towards me!
And please forgive me if I am mistaken, but it seems that some of the experts
do not take very kindly to the likes of someone like me trying to help others
by offering my own solutions to their problems? Funny that as I thought this
was a PUBLIC forum that anyone could post to, as well? Silly me!

D

Dave

Essexbiker,

I didn't mean to be condescending, nor did Gary, I'm sure. It's difficult
to accurately ascertain the "tone" of some messages, like your possible
sarcasm.
I'm a retired engineer, and spent most of the day reading approximately 1000
messages in a dozen different newsgroups, and trying to assist users
wherever I can. As a result, my replies must be brief.

We see a lot of posts from users using the web interface and coming from
various other forums. Many of these users will not, or cannot see our
replies. Many of them cannot figure out how to post a new question, so they
hijack an existing thread, sometimes with a completely different problem.
That makes it more difficult to provide assistance. Users of a dedicated
newsreader generally do not have this problem.

Everyone (except the trolls) is welcome to post in these groups. No one has
said you couldn't/shouldn't, that I can see.

Mr Essexbiker, I assure you that I do not think you are an idiot.
You are obviously well-versed in the English language and are
able to express yourself intelligently.

May I suggest that in the future you use the superior newsgroup reader
that you already possess, merely by clicking on this link:

THis is a wonderful resource, but they do sometimes become "superior" in
answering.

My problem is that I have duplicates in my mail folders that I keep and want
to know if there is a utility to delete duplicate e-mails.

I do not like the Vista alternative to Outlook. It has few really good
tools for me. It is a shadow of Outlook and it doesn't look like Microsoft
is planning on improving it.

Thanks for any help in removing duplicate e-mails in folders I save.

Not wanting to sound "superior" :)

I use OEX for that and many other mail tasks:

a.. Removing duplicate messages
a.. Importing messages from other dbx files or eml files
a.. Removing attachments from messages
a.. Saving attachments from messages
a.. Converting messages to Plain Text only
a.. Exporting messages as eml files
a.. Saving lists of messages in folders
a.. Sending messages again
a.. Editing sent messages to send again

Outlook is part of Microsoft Office and at the price they expect you to pay
for the program it is reasonable to expect it to have more features. I'm
still using office 2000 although I don't use the Outlook component as it
does have problems under Vista. If you want advice on using Outlook from an
earlier version of Office in vista the newsgroup microsoft.public.outlook
is a good place to start.

If you mean Outlook express included with pre vista OS then IMO there is not
much difference between that and Windows mail.
THis is a wonderful resource, but they do sometimes become "superior" in

If by "they" you mean members of the public that post and answer posts in
this public forum? The experts are all volunteers. Any superiority is
usually a reflection of the tone of the original poster.

In tools - accounts - click on your email acount - properties - advanced
tab. Sometimes when you leave a copy on the server it can create duplicates
in inbox. To be honest this was an annoyance in Outlook 2000 that I
haven't encountered in windows mail yet - probably luck of the draw.lol.

Vista's Windows Mail is not an alternative to Outlook.
It is a somewhat 'bare bones' free email client.
You are welcome to run Outlook on Vista if you need the added features.

Looks like Lynn & I have the same problem.I have a bunch of duplicate e-mails
I would like to delete so I can free up hard disk space and I don't really
like the idea
of doing so manually as there are several thousand in total. To ask her
question again-Is there some utility available to do this as Mr.VanDermolen
didn't seem to answer her question, but instead beat around the bush.
My problem started when I tried to combine my e-mails from my desktop with
those I have on my laptop so I would quit having e-mails in 2 separate places
by using Easy Transfer which added a 2nd account to the laptop which has
since been removed.Don't know if the messages were transferred or not.
I also realize Now I probably should have used the Import feature for
messages included in Windows Mail so all my settings were not transferred.
I was given a number last evening by a friend for 1 free tech support call
to
Microsoft, but I would prefer not to use it until absolutely necessary.
