Duplicate document name open ??!?!?

Whenever I open ANY EXCEL DOCUMENT, I get the error message "A document with the name 'document name.xls' is already open. You cannot open two documents with the same name, even if the documents are in different folders............"

To be more precise, I am getting this error when I open the document via a shortcut to the document (located on the desktop).

There are NO OTHER DOCUMENTS open !

Why do I keep getting this message ?
