my students need to provide hardcopy evidence [whilst] they work through
exams

they can take a screendump/windowdump to the clipboard by keyboard shortcut

but how do you send the clip to the printer via keyboard shortcut (without
menu route)

even better, can they dump direct to printer via keyboard?

They can't.

You have to use a program to dump the contents into and use the program to print.

Often. I suggest MS Word.

Open Word and hit "Ctrl" + "V" which pastes the clipboard into Word and it handles both text
and graphics and Word will then be used to print the pasted item.

The "Paint" program, under Programs|Accessories -- which comes standard
(read: no extra cost) with all versions of Windows -- also works, in case
you don't have Word installed.

But only handles graphics, not text. Otherwise, if Word is not available, use WordPad
(write.exe) for both text and graphics.

I'm pretty sure that screen dumps produced by PrintScreen are bitmap
images, not text.

Joe

You are probably right but the OP did mention the "clipboard" so this answer covers all
possibilities.

seems ironic to call the button "Print Screen" when it wont print :o~

thanx anyhow

If you type "Printing Screen Display" in the Windows 2000 Help index, you
will see a description of the "Graphics" command, which purports to: "allow
Windows 2000 to print on a printer the displayed contents of the screen when
you are using a color or graphics adapter." I toyed around with it a little
but could not manage to get any of my screen contents to go directly to my
laser printer by using SHIFT+PRINTSCREEN, as suggested in the Notes. I
suspect this a legacy DOS command which, despite what it says in the Help, is
not really supported in Win2k. There may be other programs available that
will do as you wish. Good luck.

i've now got a program that will do it thanx - i have read that the key
stems back from dos (which did dump screen to printer) - windows saw fit to
change this attitude - i cant understand why they left it completely
unsupported thou (for the sake of holding the shift key down)
