dummy text in frame

Gus

I am running Word 2007 on Vista platform. I have created a style to insert a
frame in the margin of a document but each time I apply it, the frame is
filled with a lot of dummy text. Is there a way to prevent the dummy text to
appear?

You cannot save text with a 'style' so what *exactly* have you done here?
If you apply a style that contains frame options to a paragraph, the frame
will contain the paragraph text.
If you insert a frame it is just an empty box.
Did you by any chance save it as a Building Block? If so remove the dummy
text and save it again without the text.

Hi Graham
Thanks for you quick response.
I have followed SusanBarnhill's tutorial
(http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/MarginalText.htm) of how to create text
in margins using frames and it works quite well except for the nuisance of
the same dummy text initially appearing in it as when you enter =rand(x,y).
I can delete it and then replace with my own text but to delete it is not
done as quickly as in a text box, e.g. I cannot use Ctrl+A as it will select
the whole document instead of only the contents of the frame.

There is nothing in that article that says anything about using dummy text.
The only text that would be in the frame would be the text to which you
applied the framed style. I believe you must have totally misunderstood the
article.

Suzanne, I now realise that if I apply the style when the insertion point is
next to a paragraph the entire paragraph appears in the frame. If I apply
the style when the insertion point is next to an empty paragraph it works
OK, I can then move the frame to where I want it to be. Is that the way the
style is meant to work?
Might I say that I appreciate your articles and replies to questions very
much; have for many years now!

The way the style is supposed to work is that you apply it to the paragraph
you want to have in the margin. That paragraph will normally be the one
immediately before the one you want it beside; if you have it set up
correctly, you won't need to move it at all.
