Duel OS, Win2000/xp

John;

Being new to any News grp I am not familiar with proper procedure in
presenting my question so, will use this format to initially present my
questions. If this isn't proper, please yank the rug!

Brien Grant placed the question about the friend who's computer had Win xp
that when up in smoke when the mother board kapuped!

The new xp program I obtained was placed onto the second computer that has
Win 2000 installed.

1) The install of XP didn't seem to effect Win 2000 with any noticeable
malfunctions. All applications seem to be intacked. This application doesn't
have any word or works programs at this time.
The C: drive Cap; 55.8 MB, used ;4.29GB with 51.5Gb free
space. AMD 1.1 g processor, 512 Memory
Printer, sound, access to IE browser and Outlook Exp all
operating in acceptable level, at least how a novice would view them.
When using Win 2000, IE browser and outlook exp, E-mail folders and address
book is normal from the original setup. (See Explanation under XP.)

2) From every indication, I can determine, the xp install was placed in the
F: drive, 9.37 GB used, 67.3 free space.

Although the install completed this portion of the install,
it produced some confusing processes, EI Downloads of software, adaware,
Spy-Search,
to name a few, were all selected and installed on the F:
drive, rather than C:, where I think they should have been placed?
The sound feature and the inability to install the printer
is a problem also.

Accessing IE browser and outlook Express must be from a different source,
as favorites in IE had to be reestablished along with all E-mail folders and
address
book listings in the outlook express program.
My genealogy program performs well in the Win 2000
application, Start, Program, Application. But, the same program, installed
twice, when
placed in the XP software doesn't appear on the Start,
Program, application, but appears in a folder within xp, unable to access
the program
from folder or Start!

When using either OS the IE and Outlook have their own
favorite listings and e-mail folders and address listings.

At this point, I'm not astute enough to determine what steps I need to take
to rectify this situation, even if correctable by my level of expertise?

I would appreciate any honest viewpoint on what direction or suggestions I
should consider in improving the problem.

Thank you all for any help, it will be really appreciated.

You have a dual boot.........2 seperate Operating Systems on 2 seperate Hard
drives or Partitions.
Each Operating System will use its own version of IE as well as Outlook
Express...each OS will create its own address book and Favorites List under
the individual user. Each Hardware device needs to be installed under each
Operating System using the approbriate drivers...eg XP sound drivers for
XP,Win2000 sound drivers for Win 2000..etc.
You can copy and paste Favorites from one OS to the other....under
Documents&Settings/username
You can "import" the address book and mail listings from within one mail
program to the other.Open the XP Outlook Exp and under File..Import..follow
the prompts
Sound..printer...........drivers need to be install under each OS...to match
that OS.They should be available from the Sound CD Printer CD
Programs will also need to be installed twice...once under each OS.Most
times into the same directory...sometimes not...and there is no set way to
tell until you install.
Somehow I feel that you were not paying attention when you install your
genealogy program ...I would suggest an uninstall and then a reinstall into
a directory other than the Windows Directory....So under XP..Control
Panel/Add&remove.......remove the program.
Let us know if you need more help

Thank you Peter, for your comments,

So, this is a duel boot!
Can each OS be accessed through the Drive identity,ei, C: or F:? in
this case,
Or do you need to reboot and enter the OS through that process?

The hardware device installations appear pretty straight forward and believe
I can
figure those steps out! I'll give it a try!

I assume the favorites and address book can be accomplished through each
drive's
identity and the folders asso with the IE and Outlook programs?

The paragraph covering the drivers re-sound, printers installed into same
directory? sometimes not?
and without a set way? Does the install suggest a method or how can one
determine where to place???

Your right Peter about lack of attention in Genealogy install, The install
of XP was placed in
the F: drive and although this program appears there, all the folders asso
with that program did
not make the trip. But, to remove this program from the Control Panel will
also remove all the files
from Win 2000, as only Rootsmagic appears once in the Control Panel!
It appears I need to do the remove or delete from the directory in the F:
drive??

Thank you again for the in depth critic, I look forward to your astute
comments.

Dont think in terms of drives...think in terms of Operating Systems...or
C2000...F/xp
You will need to access each OS seperately by picking which one to start
with when you boot up.That is your operating OS..the other OS can be seen
but not used as such. You can access the files, move.delete but you are doing
it strictly outside of that OS.
As I said you need to boot into each OS seperately if you are installing
anything and wish to run it under each OS.If you install program ABC only
under XP then it will only show up on the XP start menu and you will only be
able to run it from XP.
All programs can/may be installed into same directory ..if you install
Program ABC under XP to C:\ABC then under 2000 you could also install ABC to
C:\ABC.
Drivers are different.....A 2000 Printer/Sound driver would need to be
installed into a seperate Directory than a XP printer/sound driver...eg
C:\2000print.....F:\xpprint............or subdirectories C:\Print\2000
C:\print\XP....F:\sound\2000 F:\sound\xp
When you access Control Panel/Add&remove from XP it will only show what was
installed under XP not 2000 and the same for 2000.
If you installed the program into the same location under both operating
systems either add&remove will remove it....but it will only be changed in
the registry of the OS that you are working in.....in the registry of the
other OS it remains untouched as if you had not uninstalled it..but it will
not work anymore because the files are gone..
I used to dual boot.....I had OS#1 on the C drive OS#2 on the D drive
.....all programs for OS#1 on the Edrive and all programs for OS#2 on the F
drive.
This way I knew where everything was and which program I was uninstalling
from what OS.
Since you only have 2 drives/partition I would suggest that when you install
anything under any of the 2 OS you keep the install on the same drive as the
OS.
Saved work/personall Files can be saved to a common location and therfore be
accessible thru each program on each operating system.
If you installed your Geneology Program under XP from a CD onto the F drive
all of the files for the program should have gone there....being unfamiliar
with this program I am working on "most" program behaviour. What would not
have gone there is any work that you did in the program while in 2000.
IF you had installed that program into the same place as it was already
installed on under 2000 your work would have shown up when you opened the
program under XP.....As I said earlier if you installed under XP into a
different directory than under 2000 than the add&remove under XP will only
remove that installation...but if you installed the program under XP into
the same directory as you were using under 2000 then the files will be gone
when you do the add&remove under XP....or under 2000.
I have heard of persons setting up 2 directory structures ..eg a 2000
directory and an XP directory and installing programs accordingly.
So if they were to install ABC under 2000 they would install to
C:\2000\ABC.........
I dont know if this helps or not...........sounds more like a rant when I
read it back!!!
let me know

Peter;

This is a plate full!

I need to print and digest what has been presented to determine if I
understand your procedural steps!.

If I have any questions during this review I will get back to you.

Thank you Peter for your guidance.
