Dual os on seperate drives

Hi, I have 2 hd's on my 'puter. One is a 40 gig with xp home (build 2600) on
it. I just installed, formatted (ntfs) a new 80 gig as the slave. I have an
oem version of XP Pro that I want to install on the new drive. I want to keep
the old drive and os in my system as master though. I've considered removing
the old drive, jumping the new drive to master and just plugging it in. That
should prompt me to install an OS on ot. I have nothing on the new drive, but
have formatted it already

There are two ways to go about this:

a) The simple way. Boot the machine with your WinXP Pro
CD, then install WinXP Pro on the new drive.
Drawback: You will always have to keep drive C: in
place. If WinXP is born on drive D: then it must always
run off drive D:.

b) The professional way. Install a proper boot manager
use it to hide the two OSs from each other to make
them truly independet. XOSL is such a boot manager
and it's free.
Drawback: You have to familiarise yourself with the
chosen boot manager.

I haven't seen this behaviour before but then there are lots
of things that I haven't seen yet . . .

I think your options are:
a) Experiment some more to see if you can find a way out
of your predicament;
b) Wait for some other responses that will tell you how to
proceed.
c) Use a proper boot manager.

My favourite is option c) but I'm aware that learning about
a boot manager is not everyone's cup of tea, no matter how
good an option it may be.

Check your BIOS to see if you can switch which hard drive is the boot drive.

If you boot up from the WinXP Pro CD, you should get a choice of which drive to
install it on. I did when I installed WinXP Pro on separate N: drive in my
system. My C: drive contains Win2k Pro.

The boot.ini file on the C: drive is modified to suit the dual boot
configuration during installation.
